BAC chart

BAC chart by weight, sex, and drinks

Use this BAC chart to find an estimated blood alcohol level by drink count and body weight. Choose a chart, pick a drink count, and compare the result with common BAC ranges.

In this BAC chart, 1 drink means roughly one common serving.

1 beer = 12 oz / 355 ml at 5%

1 wine = 5 oz / 150 ml at 12%

1 liquor = 1.5 oz / 45 ml at 40%

A 500 ml beer or stronger pour can count as more than 1 drink.

Rows = drinks

Columns = body weight. Cells = estimated BAC.

Time adjustment

Subtract about .015 for each hour after drinking.

What BAC means

BAC, or blood alcohol concentration, is the amount of alcohol in the bloodstream shown as a percentage. A BAC of .08 means about .08% of the blood volume is alcohol.

How to read this BAC chart

  1. 1Find the chart for the sex estimate you want to use.
  2. 2Use the body weight column closest to the person’s weight in pounds.
  3. 3Read across from the total number of drinks consumed in about one hour.
  4. 4For each hour after drinking, subtract about .015 from the BAC estimate.

BAC effects

What different BAC levels can feel like

These ranges describe common effects. Real impairment varies by person, tolerance, food, medication, sleep, and drinking speed.

.02 - .04%

Light effects

Mood may lift and inhibition can drop. Some attention and judgment changes can begin.

.05 - .07%

Impairment increases

Coordination, alertness, and reaction time may be affected. Many people underestimate this range.

.08 - .10%

Common legal intoxication range

Judgment, perception, and driving-related skills are meaningfully impaired.

.11 - .15%

Clearly impaired

Speech, balance, reaction time, and decision-making are significantly affected.

.16 - .19%

Strong intoxication

Blackouts, nausea, poor balance, and risky behavior become more likely.

.20 - .24%

Severe range

Disorientation, vomiting, and injury risk rise. Help from others may be needed.

.25 - .30%

Danger range

Loss of consciousness and alcohol poisoning risk become serious concerns.

.31%+

Emergency risk

This can be life-threatening. Seek emergency help if severe symptoms are present.

Tracking BAC

BAC chart tables

The values below approximate BAC after a given number of drinks in about one hour. Each additional hour after drinking lowers the estimate by about .015.

Possibly affected

Lower ranges can still affect attention.

Impaired

Judgment and coordination can change.

Legally intoxicated

At or above many common legal limits.

Biphasic effect

More alcohol does not mean better effects

Alcohol can feel stimulating at lower BAC levels, but after a certain point the depressant effects dominate. A rough turning point is around .055 BAC.

Up to about .055

Some people feel more talkative, relaxed, or energized.

After about .055

Sedation, slower thinking, coordination problems, and risk increase.
